KDE Linux Approaching Beta Milestone

KDE Linux is approaching its first beta milestone, with contributors saying it “remains 85% of the way there.”

KDE Linux is the distro being developed by the KDE developers and featuring the KDE Plasma desktop environment and apps. Until now, KDE did not have an official distro, although KDE Neon came close. Even then, KDE Neon was marketed more as a testbed for developers. The KDE devs specifically wanted to avoid an official distro for a long time out of fear of alienating other distros.

Unfortunately, KDE Neon was plagued with problems. The distro was based on Ubuntu LTS, but the KDE components were kept up-to-date, often resulting in conflicts with the older LTS base. Further complicating the issue is that many other KDE-based distros have a reputation for being bloated, or running older outdated KDE components.

As a result of those and other issues, the KDE devs finally decided that the best way to showcase KDE Plasma and KDE apps was to have an actual official distro that could serve as a reference for how such a distro should look and operate. The distro is built using Arch Linux packages, though KDE says it shouldn’t be considered an Arch-based distro, and it is an image-based operating system. That means that the core components of the OS are difficult to customize, much like other so-called “immutable distros.” The benefits of that approach are increased reliability, safety, and security.

In their October 2026 blog, the KDE devs said October was another infrastructure-heavy month for the project:

October was another infrastructure-heavy month for the project. A major initiative involved migrating the OS image storage and updating system to work with KDE’s new S3-based file storage server. Another consisted of moving KDE Linux’s OpenQA system to a dedicated server on KDE infrastructure, and off of Harald Sitter’s personal server.

This very large amount of work was done by Bhushan Shah, Sky Poincet, Harald Sitter, and Ben Cooksley, so thanks to them!

KDE Linux is making progress towards its Beta milestone, and remains 85% of the way there.

KDE Linux will likely be a very popular option, giving users a clean KDE experience as its developers intended.
