Apple’s 2027 iPhone Bet: All-Glass Redesign Tests Limits of Display Tech

Apple Inc. has kept its plans for a major iPhone overhaul on schedule for 2027. The device, widely expected to mark two decades since the original iPhone launched, will feature an all-glass construction with curved edges on every side. No major changes have occurred in the roadmap. No recent hiccups in development.

That assurance comes directly from Bloomberg. Mark Gurman reported in mid-August that the company still intends to ship iPhone Pro models next year built around a glassy aesthetic. Glass covers the front and back. It bends into the sides. A thin metal band runs through the middle. The look revives an old ambition once pushed by former design chief Jony Ive: a phone that feels like one continuous slab.

But the path there is anything but simple. Under-display sensors remain the biggest question mark. Face ID components and the front camera must disappear for the design to work. Some analysts doubt the technology will arrive in time. Others see steady progress in testing.

The discussion heated up after a Jefferies note suggested Apple had scrapped the project. Supply-chain checks pointed to poor yields. The analyst projected a steep average selling price near $2,060 and warned of margin pressure if the idea spread to future Pro models. Gurman pushed back hard. “There have been no recent changes to the iPhone roadmap or any recent development hiccups,” he wrote on X. The analyst simply hadn’t seen the part yet because current production technology makes early visibility impossible.

A prominent Chinese leaker added weight to Apple’s position days later. Digital Chat Station confirmed active development of the commemorative models, internally known as V73 and V74. Two sizes will ship. They match the current Pro and Pro Max footprint yet deliver larger viewable area through aggressive edge curvature. One report points to a 6.96-inch panel on the bigger variant. The extra real estate comes from glass that wraps further around the chassis without increasing overall dimensions much.

MacRumors detailed those claims in August. The leaker also noted Apple has ordered larger vapor chamber cooling systems for these phones. That aligns with expectations of a more power-hungry display stack and possibly faster silicon. The same cooling solution is reportedly headed for the second-generation foldable device arriving alongside it.

Timing matters here. Apple plans to launch the first foldable iPhone this fall, almost certainly called iPhone Ultra or something similar. Recent reports from CNET on September 4 indicate the device could appear at the September 9 event but reach customers later due to limited initial production. Its under-display camera technology will serve as a proving ground. Success there could accelerate similar features in the 2027 models.

Yet experts disagree on readiness. Display analyst Ross Young has repeatedly said full under-display Face ID likely won’t arrive until 2028 or later. Image quality from under-panel cameras still suffers compared with traditional cutouts. Apple has tested a “spliced micro-transparent glass” approach that lets infrared sensors operate through the OLED layer. Early prototypes show promise. Mass production at scale is another story.

So what will the 2027 phone actually look like? Expect two Pro-sized variants. Curved glass on all four edges. A return to an all-glass back after years of metal and glass hybrids. The rear camera array will probably stay raised because of the folded optics needed for telephoto zoom. Haptic solid-state buttons could return after earlier prototypes were shelved. A custom image sensor developed in-house may replace Sony parts across the lineup.

Battery life could improve too. Silicon-anode cells have surfaced in rumors for years. Combined with more efficient 2-nanometer chips, the anniversary model might deliver noticeable gains without adding thickness. Price? No one knows for sure. The Jefferies estimate suggested a premium jump. History shows Apple rarely discounts its biggest design leaps. The iPhone X carried a starting price well above predecessors in 2017.

Recent supply chain chatter reinforces commitment. Wccftech reported in June that Apple had begun molding prototypes for the 20 Pro, 20 Pro Max and the foldable’s successor. Six flagship devices could launch across 2027 if current plans hold. That crowded calendar risks cannibalization. Apple may stagger releases more than usual.

And the stakes are high. The iPhone still generates the majority of Apple’s profit. A misstep on the 20th anniversary device would echo for years. Success could reset expectations for what a smartphone looks like, much as the iPhone X did by killing the home button and adding Face ID.

Challenges remain. Yield rates on complex curved glass worry manufacturers. Integrating MagSafe into a thinner foldable already tested Apple’s engineering. The anniversary model will push those boundaries further. Yet the company has shown patience before. It spent years perfecting the first foldable before committing to launch.

Investors will watch closely. So will competitors. Samsung has shipped curved displays for years but never matched Apple’s volume or quality control at scale. If Apple pulls off the four-sided curve without compromising durability or battery, the industry may follow once again.

One thing seems clear. The 2027 iPhone won’t be business as usual. It aims to feel fresh in the hand. Different in the pocket. And perhaps, just different enough to justify the wait and the price.
