Greece Bans Social Media for Children Under 15

Greece has become the latest country to ban social media for children, with the country’s parliament banning its use for children under 15.

The legislation was passed Friday, but does not go into effect until January 1, 2027. Much to the chagrin of privacy advocates, the bill requires platforms to verify the ages of its users, meaning it will likely be a dragnet that sweeps up adults as well as children.

According to Reuters, Greece is one of seven countries pursuing wider age verification legislation within the EU. The country joins Australia as a major country taking such a drastic measure to curb social media among children, although the UK, Austria, Slovenia, and Spain are all working on their own versions of similar legislation.

Interestingly, according to TechRadar, only the ruling New Democracy party voted in favor of the bill, with the PASOK party abstaining and the remaining five parties voting against.
